SOTA (Students Older Than Average) and The Salon

Offer aid to students returning to college from a wide variety of experiences to re-introduce them into the student community.  The Salon concentrates on gathering students to socialize, discuss a variety of topics, enjoy good food, and spend an enjoyable evening together.

Both grew out of previous projects.  SOTA was an organization formed by the University of Texas, Austin to aid students returning to college from a wide variety of experiences to re-introduce them into the student community, veterans, single parents, and returning students.  The Salon is an offshoot of the Salon begun by Gertrude Stein in 1920 to highlight the works of newer artists (Picasso) and others via an invitation only private event.  Here at UTD the Salon concentrates on gathering a range of students who have gathered for the Watering Hole as an after event, a place to socialize, discuss a variety of topics, enjoy good food, and spend an enjoyable evening together.  This Salon hasn’t offered the art option, nor the invitation option, the event is open to the space available.
